Suzanne Vorshekh from the Association of Interdisciplinary Research on Ukraine (KIU) in Viadrin notes that the loss from the Russian Federation for ecology can reach 72 billion euros.
“As an example, it gives 25 thousand hectares of burnt forest, 220 nature reserves or destroyed, and almost 1 million hectares of replaced forests and lands. War also leads to the death of animals. The number of dolphins and whales in the Black Sea continues to increase. They are destroyed by torpedoes and mines, the noise of water supply of warships and water contamination, ” – the message reads.
The search for evidence of ecocide aims to hold the perpetrators and claim damages. Despite the fact that the International Criminal Court in the Hague has not yet qualified ecocide as a crime, the European Union and the UN are actively conducting a campaign for the recognition of environmental crimes as those considered in the ICS.
