According to the media, France has announced plans for large -scale reconstruction of the Louvre, which ranks first in the rating of the most visited museums in the world.
During the reconstruction, the most famous Louvre exhibit – a picture of Leonardo da Vinci “Mona Lisa” – “will move” to a new room, where you can look on the canvas separately from the rest of the museum collection, for a fee. In particular, Emmanuel Macron said such grandiose plans for the museum’s reconstruction.
Also, the museum plans to make a second entrance for tourists, in order to unload the main entrance a little – through the famous glass pyramid on the square in front of the palace. The concept of a new entrance will be developed on the results of a specially conducted international architectural competition.
According to Macron, all work should last about five years, and the updated Louvre will open their doors to visitors no later than 2031.
The price for tourists who live outside the European Union, including the British, will also increase. The change in the cost of tickets is expected from January 2026.
The Novy Renaissance project was response to the complaints of the Louran Director Laurens de Car director that there are serious problems before the museum, primarily overloading by visitors in the conditions of infrastructure destruction. Only look at the Mona Lisa about 30,000 people every day, and the average time of viewing the painting through the crowds is only 50 seconds.
The new entrance will open access to new underground exhibition spaces, which will be located under the inner area of the Kur-Carre Palace and will, for their part, connected to the main area, which is located under the pyramid.
According to Macron, the restructuring of the facade is the greatest change in the appearance of the museum over the last 40 years, since the time of the “Great Louvre” project François Mitterran. The palace of the Esplanade is planned to plant trees, in fact turning it into a park, which is perfectly consistent with the plans of the City Hall of landscaping of the central part of the French capital.
Transferring to the new place “Mona Lisa” will allow the picture to be given to the review properly, at the same time facilitating visitors to watch other masterpieces of the museum collection, which now, according to Macron, is not taken into account too often.
The Louvre’s internal infrastructure over the future will also be significantly updated and expanded. Plans include the modernization of old and construction of new toilets, restaurants and recreation.
The total cost of the project is estimated at several hundred million euros.
