Presidential elections have started in Belarus

In the morning of January 26, the presidential elections started in Belarus, the Belarusian service of Radio Liberty writes.

It is known that a total of 5,325 polling stations were formed. They opened from 8:00 a.m. local time and will be open until 8:00 p.m.

On the website of the CEC of Belarus, there is a service for finding a polling station – by specifying the necessary data, any voter can find out where his polling station is located. At the same time, it was emphasized that each voter must vote in person, voting by other persons is not allowed.

Chairman of the CEC Ihor Karpenko said that during the elections in the country, international observers “monitor the election process in all regions.”

In addition, it is claimed that “representatives and heads of the CEC of the CIS countries and far abroad are present.” It is also stated that there are individual “experts” representing “almost all continents (except Australia) and 17 Western European countries.”

The mass media write that the press conference of the head of the CEC, Ihor Karpenko, “On the preliminary results of voting in the presidential elections” is scheduled for January 27, from 2:30 to 3:00.

Oleksandr Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus since 1994 and is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, announced his intention to run for president again at the beginning of last year.

A number of Western countries and institutions have already made statements that they do not intend to recognize their results. At its meeting on January 22, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on repression and illegitimate elections in Belarus.

Elections in Belarus are held in conditions of political crisis, large-scale repression and, according to international organizations, are unfree and undemocratic.

There are no officially registered opposition parties or independent public organizations left in Belarus. Since 2001, the international community and independent observers have not recognized the results of elections in Belarus.

The results of the vote, which will take place on Sunday in Belarus, are known in advance – this was the position expressed by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tyhiy, at a briefing on January 23. He stated that the vote “would like to be called a presidential election, if there were grounds for it.”
