Details: The publication notes that this visit by Rubio will emphasize the seriousness of President Donald Trump’s intentions to return the Panama Canal to US control.
According to the interlocutor, who wished to remain anonymous, the US Secretary of State also plans to visit Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica.
The trip is expected to be Rubio’s first overseas since he was sworn in as top US diplomat on January 21.
Bloomberg emphasizes that the visit underscores Trump’s focus on ending illegal migration through Central America and deporting people to their home countries.
For reference: Usually, the head of the State Department’s first trip is to a geopolitically important US ally: Rubio’s predecessors, Anthony Blinken and Rex Tillerson, went to Japan and Germany, respectively.
Prehistory:
- Trump has called for U.S. control of the Panama Canal to be restored unless the cost of passage for military and commercial ships is reduced. He also accused China of exploiting the waterway.
- Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino was quick to assert Panama’s sovereignty over the canal and deny any Chinese involvement in its operation.
