All governors of Russian Siberia stopped reporting losses in Ukraine

All heads of Russian regions in Siberia and the Far East have stopped reporting losses in Ukraine, Radio Liberty’s Siberia.Reality project drew attention.

The head of Sakhalin, Vasyl Limarenko, turned out to be the last governor beyond the Urals who reported losses among the residents of the region in the war against Ukraine in his Telegram channel. Judging by Limarenko’s reports, losses among the military from the Sakhalin region in the fall of 2024 more than doubled compared to the summer months.

On December 18, Limarenko made the last entry about the dead, after which he stopped writing obituaries. In January, the regional authorities announced that they had stopped publishing casualties at the request of the Ministry of Defense. The authorities believe that Ukrainian intelligence can “use obituaries for their own purposes”, which “causes the persecution of the families of the dead”. In 2023, the authorities of Khakassia reported a similar request from the military department.

The head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolaev, the head of Tuva, Vladyslav Khovalig, the governor of Kamchatka, Volodymyr Solodov, and the head of the Amur region, Vasyl Orlov, directly reported on the deaths at the front in the spring and summer of 2022 – in the first months of the invasion, but soon stopped publishing. Some leaders did not report losses among the military from their region at all.

According to the calculations of Mediazona and the Russian service of the BBC, the confirmed losses of the Russian army in Ukraine in January 2025 reached 88,700 people. We are talking about those whose names are confirmed from official or open sources. The authors of the study note that real losses may be much higher.

Since September 2022, the Russian authorities have not officially reported losses at the front.

Western intelligence agencies, judging by media reports, estimate the losses of both Russia and Ukraine at hundreds of thousands of killed and wounded, while Russian losses are estimated to be higher.
