Law enforcement officers in Odesa detained a gang of racketeers who demanded payment of a fictitious debt from the military. They learned that he received financial assistance from the state for his father who died in the war.

This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office and the National Police.

Detention of one of the racketeers

According to the investigation, the perpetrators found the phone number of a 23-year-old serviceman and started calling and demanding money. Fearing for his life and health, the victim paid them 70 thousand hryvnias. But this was not enough for the suspects – they wanted another $850, which he allegedly owed them.

According to the investigation, the money was demanded by a group that “specialized” in eliminating imaginary debts. In case of disagreement to return the money, they harassed the victims, resorted to beatings and psychological pressure, threatened with physical violence.

The leader of the group is a repeatedly convicted resident of Podilsk, who is in the pre-trial detention center in the status of “observer”.

When the accused did not receive the money, their accomplice at large organized a meeting with the victim. Using physical force and psychological pressure, he forcibly took 5,000 hryvnias from the soldier, which he had at that moment. However, later the law enforcement officers detained him.

In total, three men convicted of serious crimes, aged 30, 28 and 25, from Odesa and Mykolaiv regions were involved in the crime. The two older ones are in the Odesa pre-trial detention center, and the youngest was released from prison at the end of last year.

The perpetrator, who was at large, was detained by law enforcement officers. The court chose a preventive measure for him in the form of detention without bail.

All three persons involved were informed of the suspicion of demanding the transfer of someone else’s property with the threat of violence against the victim, committed by a group of persons under martial law based on a prior conspiracy. According to the sanction of ch. 4 Art. 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, they face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

Earlier, law enforcement officers in Kharkiv neutralized a gang that demanded $100,000 “for peace” from a local businessman and threatened to kill a child.

Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine detained members of a criminal group engaged in racketeering in Kyiv and Chernihiv regions. Seven men were detained, four of them members of one of the volunteer battalions.

Law enforcement officers in Kharkiv conducted a special operation during which they detained five members of a gang of racketeers. They demanded 700 thousand dollars from the farmer.
