President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that in Davos he held a meeting with the head of the Christian Democratic Union party, the head of the CDU/CSU opposition faction in the German Bundestag, Friedrich Mertz.

“I thanked Germany, the entire German society for the constant support of our state and people. We discussed how to further bring a just peace for Ukraine, as well as global challenges and the situation at the front,” Zelenskyy wrote in a telegram.

The press service of the Ukrainian president reported that Zelensky and Merts “exchanged views on the most important international issues and global challenges”, discussed the necessary efforts and joint steps with allies to establish a just and lasting peace.

“The president talked about the situation on the battlefield, in particular in the Pokrovsky direction. The head of state emphasized that Germany’s approval of an additional package of defense support worth three billion euros is critically important for Ukraine. In addition, Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Friedrich Mertz discussed Russia’s attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of European countries and countering Russian propaganda,” the message reads.

In December, Mertz visited Kyiv, which took place a week after the unannounced visit of Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Ukraine.
