Everything depends on the USA: Zelenskyi answered why Ukraine is still not in NATO

For decades, Ukraine was kept at the door of NATO, despite loud promises about membership. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, criticized the weakness of Western leaders and the mistakes of the Ukrainian authorities, stressing that the future of the country in the Alliance depends on the decision of the United States.

Zelensky said this during a meeting with representatives of the International Media Council, reports UNN.

From some states, I think, it was not a very transparent policy at first, and they did not support us in NATO. These were simply false words: “Yes, Ukraine will be in NATO.” Ten years have passed, and Ukraine is still not in NATO, and this was unfair to Ukraine and Ukrainians. It was also dishonest on the part of our leaders

He noted that Ukraine was often mistaken when some of its leaders claimed that the country was promised membership in NATO, because this did not correspond to reality.

He also believed that the position of Germany and the United States on this issue was weak, because they had a dialogue with the Russians and were defeated in it, constantly referring to some kind of agreement with the Russian side.

But I, as a Ukrainian, have a question: why did you negotiate about us without us? We are an independent country. Why in the 90s, in the early 2000s and beyond, you constantly decided without Ukraine, what security guarantees we should have? Is there a place for Ukraine in NATO or not? Why did you do that? This, in my opinion, is very unfair and dishonest behavior

He emphasized that he strives to restore the respect of other countries for Ukraine. He noted that Ukraine is fighting for security guarantees and aspires to become a member of NATO. At the same time, most of the countries of the Alliance support Ukraine, but there remain four states – the United States, Germany, Slovakia and Hungary – which do not yet support this aspiration.

However, the decision of all these countries depends on the USA. Countries often want to show themselves as leaders, but the issue of Ukraine’s membership in NATO depends precisely on the United States, specifically on its president. If Trump is ready to see Ukraine in NATO, we will be there. Everyone will support. If President Trump is not ready, we will not be there

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the allies should support Ukraine more “to change the trajectory of the war”.

At the same time, the President of Poland Andrzej Duda demands to invite Ukraine to NATO, because this will be the first step related to the provision of real security guarantees to Ukraine by the countries of the Alliance.
