Trump has instructed Kellogg to end the war in Ukraine in 100 days, but he will have a hard time reaching a peace deal – WSJ

Keith Kellogg, appointed by US President Donald Trump as a special representative for Ukraine, has a plan to end the war in Ukraine, but Trump will personally oversee the negotiations, writes The Washington Post. “President Trump instructed retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg to end the war in Ukraine in 100 days. Almost no one believes that he can do it – especially the Russians. Rather, it is said that Kellogg’s role as special envoy to Ukraine, which falls on a wave of similar appointments, is the first step in the peace talks that Trump intends to keep under his control,” the newspaper writes. But, the WSJ notes, reaching an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin will be much more difficult than Trump promised on the campaign trail when he said he would end the conflict before taking office. Like some of Trump’s other special envoys, Kellogg appears to have been appointed despite a lack of relevant experience. Kellogg’s former colleagues say his military experience could be important to the president as he weighs the consequences of giving or withholding aid to Ukraine. But he has never served as a diplomat, and if his White House experience is any indication, he will not engage in any real negotiations with Russia, his former colleagues say. In early January, Kellogg said he aimed to try to find a solution to end Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine within 100 days of Trump’s January 20 inauguration. ”, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org

In early January, Kellogg said he aimed to try to find a solution to end Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine within 100 days of Trump’s January 20 inauguration. According to him, the US president “is not trying to give something to Putin or the Russians, he is actually trying to save the sovereignty of Ukraine.”

During the election campaign, the US president stated that he could end the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours after taking office. Now he says he will try to do it for six months.

Ukrainian officials are concerned that any hastily arranged talks could allow Russia to hold on to Ukrainian territory it has seized and give Russian forces time to rebuild and reorganize.
