Zelensky’s direct speech: “Our state is strong and independent, because it is united and cathedral. We always remember this, especially on this day, January 22, the Day of the Unity of Ukraine. I record this address on Sofia Square. A historical place. A place of strength. A place of wisdom. given us by the events that happened here more than a hundred years ago, and further episodes of our history, which prove that when we fight, we certainly get what we want, but when we we quarrel, then we lose ours.”
Details: He recalled that it was on this square that the Act of Unification was proclaimed, when Right- and Left-Bank Ukraine united into a single state.
“But ambitions, discord and enemies who took advantage of them – enemies, by the way, both from outside and inside – did not allow independent Ukraine to exist for long… Several generations lived under foreign flags and traditions, which were told how to live, how to speak, how to think, who to love, who to hate. This is not one’s statehood, this is what loss of independence is,” the president said.
He added that on February 24, 2022, Ukrainians had to prove how “important it is to preserve unity and stand side by side.”
“(Day – ed.) February 24 became a challenge, a test of unity, of maturity, of faith in Ukraine. And we united… At the call from within. And together we were able to stand… In the word – “together” – the hidden strength of Ukrainians This is about what we are capable of when we choose not our own ambitions, but choose Ukraine… When we choose to defend our own defend with all your might,” the president emphasized.
He recalled the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, when “there were not enough weapons for all the volunteers, but there was definitely enough courage, concern, self-belief, faith in Ukraine.”
“That’s what the council is. That’s the unity that is necessary to fight for one’s own right to live in peace,” the president said.
Zelenskyy expressed confidence that all future generations of Ukrainians will come to Sofia Square on all holidays “under the blue-yellow flag and in our state.”
“And we will do everything to make it so. So that there is no shame in front of them, so that they know that we did not repeat the mistakes of the past. And Ukraine exists. Ukraine is one. Peaceful. Cathedral,” concluded the president.
