Rubio said the Trump administration wants to secure peace between Russia and Ukraine and ensure that it is “sustainable.”
“We don’t just want the conflict to end and then resume in two, three, four years. We want to bring stability,” he said.
The Secretary of State emphasized that the administration of US President Donald Trump wants to do everything possible to help end the war.
“This is a war and a conflict started by Russia, but now it has reached a dead end, a protracted and bloody conflict. It was incredibly destructive, I would say, for both Russia and Ukraine, but Ukraine is paying the biggest price for its energy infrastructure. For the sake of the people whose lives were lost, for the sake of the millions of Ukrainians who were forced to leave their countries and live abroad, this conflict must be stopped,” Rubio said.
On January 21, the US Senate unanimously confirmed Marco Rubio as Secretary of State.
During the election campaign, Donald Trump stated that he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. However, at a press conference on January 7, he said he hoped to end hostilities within six months.
During his inauguration speech, Donald Trump did not directly mention Russia’s war against Ukraine, but said he wanted his legacy to be “a legacy of a peacemaker and a unifier.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously said that Trump could play a decisive role in ending the war with Russia and help stop Putin.
On January 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at a meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation that Russia is open to dialogue with the new administration of US President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine. Putin also congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as US president and said that Russia hopes to build a dialogue with the United States “on the basis of mutual respect.”
According to the American Institute for the Study of War, Putin reiterated on January 20 that the Kremlin is ready to negotiate with the United States regarding the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine, but made it clear that he maintains his demands for the full surrender of Ukraine.
