On January 21, the Lviv Railway District Court decided to sentence a 19-year-old man from Lviv to five years in prison for setting fire to servicemen’s cars.

According to the materials of the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police, the man came to the attention of the special services of the Russian Federation when he was looking for money in Telegram channels. At one of the pubs, he received an offer of quick earnings in exchange for cooperation and performance of certain “tasks”. According to the instructions, he first tracked the cars of the Ukrainian military, then photographed them and sent them to the curator. After receiving the media files, the curator would instruct the destruction of potential targets. According to this algorithm, the person involved set fire to the car of a serviceman of the combat brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

After completing the first task, he was assigned to recruit other young people. Together with a minor, he also set fire to an SUV of a military serviceman and a car of a charity organization that was transporting aid to the military.

Performers reported to customers with video materials.

According to the official notification of the SBU in the Lviv region, the counter-intelligence of the SBU arrested the suspect “red-handed” along with an accomplice in July 2024. On the basis of the evidence collected by the investigators of the Security Service, the court found the person involved guilty under articles 114-1 (obstructing the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations committed by a group of persons following a prior conspiracy) and 304 (involvement of minors in criminal activity) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The materials regarding the minor participant in the crime are under consideration in court.

On January 15, the Security Service of Ukraine announced the arrest of more than 450 arson suspects during 2024.

Earlier, RFE/RL’s investigative project “Schemy” found that Russian special services are massively using minor Ukrainians to set fire to the cars of the Armed Forces and TCC buildings as part of a disinformation campaign of the Russian Federation, the purpose of which is to show that there is an active underground in Ukraine, which in this way opposes general mobilization.
