The Kremlin says that the Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, in a conversation with the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, said that “the goal of the Ukrainian settlement should not be a short-term ceasefire, but a long-term peace based on the interests of Russia.”
Source: Putin’s assistant Yuriy Ushakov, quoted by the Russian “Interfax”, “RIA Novosti”
Ushakov’s direct speech: “As for the Ukrainian settlement itself, as the president emphasized the other day, he also said this today: the goal of the settlement should not be some short truce, not some respite, but long-term peace based on respect for our objective interests.”
Details: On January 21, Putin and Xi had a video call.
“RIA Novosti” notes that the conversation is not related to the inauguration of Donald Trump, the agreement on its holding was reached back in December.
It is noted that the conversation lasted one hour and 35 minutes and “took place in a friendly atmosphere.”
What preceded: At a meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation on January 20, Putin, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, confirmed Russia’s readiness for peace negotiations with the new administration of US President Donald Trump.
Putin stressed that any peace settlement must be based on “eliminating the root causes” of the conflict, which he said includes meeting Russia’s tough demands.
These demands include the permanent “neutral” status of Ukraine, its non-adherence to NATO, strict limits on the size of the Ukrainian army, and the removal of the Ukrainian government from power. According to the conclusions of the Institute for the Study of War, this is actually a demand for the complete surrender of Ukraine.
