The population remains the main source of demand for foreign currency in Ukraine. In the first 20 days of January, citizens purchased more than 930 million dollars in cash and non-cash forms.
This was announced by the former chairman of the NBU Council Bohdan Danylyshyn.
According to Danylyshyn, during this period, the National Bank of Ukraine carried out currency interventions in the total amount of 2.5 billion dollars, of which 39% were purchased by the population.
He also noted that in 2024, citizens purchased 35% of currency from the total volume of NBU interventions, while in 2023 this figure was 17%, and in 2022 – only 4%. In general, in 2024, the volume of purchases of foreign currency by the population tripled compared to 2023.
In addition, Danylyshyn mentioned that the International Monetary Fund forecasts for 2025 the net intervention of the NBU at the level of 36 billion dollars (an increase of 5%), which will allow maintaining the average annual exchange rate at the level of 43.4 hryvnias per dollar (an increase of 8%) .
We will remind, the day before the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) increased the exchange rate of the dollar against the hryvnia. The currency rallied after falling for three consecutive days.
And during the week of January 13-17, 2025, the NBU sold 1.015 million dollars on the interbank currency market.
