It is noted that the 6.4-magnitude earthquake occurred on Tuesday, January 21, in a mountainous rural area in southern Taiwan near the city of Chiayi.
The earthquake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei.
The quake struck shortly after midnight local time at a depth of 9.4 km (6 miles) with an epicenter in Dapu Township in Jiayi County, according to the weather service.
The fire department said several people were trapped in damaged buildings in the city of Tainan, and some had already been rescued.
The Jiayi City Fire Department also said there were no reports of serious casualties in the city so far. At the same time, an official from Dapu told Reuters that some villages had lost electricity and buildings had been damaged.
The Dapu fire service told the agency that there were no “obvious signs of a disaster”.
The island’s weather service said there was minor damage.
