He denies Chinese interference in the work of his administration.
Panama responded to Trump / UNIAN collage / ScreenshotsThe President of the Republic of Panama, Jose Raul Mulino, reacted to the new promise of the leader of the United States of America, Donald Trump, to take control of the Panama Canal.He published a response to the politician’s inaugural speech on his microblog X. Mulino writes that the channel is Panamanian, and its administration will continue to remain under Panamanian control with continued neutrality:
“There is no country in the world that interferes with the work of our administration. The canal was not a concession to anyone. It was the result of a generational struggle that culminated in 1999 as a result of the Torrijos-Carter agreement, and from then until today, for 25 years, continuously, we have responsibly managed it and expanded it to serve the world and its commerce, including the United States of America.”
The Panamanian president also called for the following issues to be discussed through dialogue: “Without undermining our rights, full sovereignty and ownership of our channel.”
Trump’s encroachment on the Panama CanalPreviously, the American president had already accused Panama of receiving too much payment from American ships for passage through the canal. He also stated about the possible influence of China on his work.
During the inaugural speech, the politician repeated again that he intends to “take away” the Panama Canal.
