Macron says the war in Ukraine “will not end tomorrow or the day after tomorrow”

French President Emmanuel Macron said Russia’s war against Ukraine would not end “tomorrow or the day after tomorrow” after the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, who promised a quick peace.

In his address to the French armed forces, Macron emphasized that it is important to give Ukraine “the means to enter any future negotiations from a position of strength.”

“The challenge, when hostilities cease, will be to give Ukraine guarantees against any return to war on its territory and to guarantee our own security,” he said.

Macron also repeated the call for European countries to take more responsibility for their own defense.

“What will we do in Europe tomorrow if our American ally withdraws its warships from the Mediterranean? If they send their fighters from the Atlantic to the Pacific? The answer must come from us,” Macron said.

During the election campaign, Donald Trump stated that he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. However, at a press conference on January 7, he said he hoped to end hostilities within six months.

During his inauguration speech, Donald Trump did not directly mention Russia’s war against Ukraine, but said he wanted his legacy to be “a legacy of a peacemaker and a unifier.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously said that Trump could play a decisive role in ending the war with Russia and help stop Putin.

On January 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at a meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation that Russia is open to dialogue with the new administration of US President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine. Putin also congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as US president and said that Russia hopes to build a dialogue with the United States “on the basis of mutual respect.”

Analysts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) proved that the Kremlin does not want to make compromises in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.
