What happened? Monfils failed to finish the 1/8 final match of Aus Open 2025 and was eliminated

French tennis player Gael Monfils (ATP 41) completed his performances at the 2025 Australian Open.

In the round of 16, Elina Svitolina’s husband took to the court against the American Ben Shelton (USA, ATP 20). The opponents held three tie-breaks, and at the start of the fourth game, the Frenchman withdrew from the match. The game ended in 3 hours.

Gael refused to continue the match due to foot problems.

Monfils ended his 8-game winning streak. Before the start of the Australian major, he won the trophy at the ATP 250 tournament in Auckland.

Shelton made it to the Aus Open quarterfinals for the first time in his career. He will compete against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego, who previously defeated Lerner Tien, to reach the semi-finals.
