The Tiraspolgaz company from the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldavian Republic agreed to receive gas through the Moldovan company Moldovagaz.

Such a decision was made so that residents and social institutions of Transnistria would get heat and electricity sooner, said the head of the PMR Vadym Krasnoselskyi, reports Kommersant.

At the meeting of the operational headquarters of the republic, Krasnoselsky said that on January 18, Tiraspolgaz sent a message to Moldovagaz about the agreement to supply natural gas through the pipeline. The Transnistrian company undertook to pay for fuel transit.

President of Moldova Maia Sandu (Photo: REUTERS/Vladislav Culiomza) Sandu confirmed that the head of the unrecognized Transnistria went to Moscow “to negotiate for gas”

As reported, the president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, said that the supply of Russian gas through intermediaries violates international sanctions and is illegal. Only supplies through Moldovagaz, whose majority shareholder is Gazprom, will be considered legal.

On January 1, 2025, the transit agreement between Gazprom and Naftogaz expired, in connection with which Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas through its territory, in particular in the direction of Transnistria.

After that, centralized heating and hot water supply were turned off in PMR due to lack of gas supplies.

Moldova offered unrecognized Transnistria help with gas purchases.

However, the separatists refused to help Moldova in supplying gas.

As a result, in order to overcome the energy crisis in the PMR, the Russian Federation decided to purchase gas on the European spot markets through the intermediary company Natural Gaz DC. According to this scheme, they planned to purchase gas from January to April in the amount of approximately 3 million cubic meters per day, at a price of approximately $164 million.
