Early in the morning on Monday, January 20, 90 Palestinian prisoners were released in Israel. It came about 80 minutes after the end of the first day of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement.

According to a representative of the Israeli prison service, the prisoners were transferred from “several prison institutions” to Ofer prison, located in Ramallah on the West Bank of the Jordan River. After that, they were released from Ofer Prison and the Jerusalem Detention Center.
According to Reuters, 69 women and 21 teenagers from the West Bank and Jerusalem were released from Israeli prisons.
On January 19, Hamas militants handed over three Israeli hostages to the International Committee of the Red Cross: Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher and Emily Damari. They were held in the Gaza Strip from October 7, 2023.
Dozens of masked fighters from Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades were present at the hostage transfer, which took place at Al-Sarayah Crossing.

On January 17, Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams in Doha signed an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
On the same day, the Israeli government approved the agreement.
On January 19, Israel officially announced a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after Hamas handed over a list of the first hostages to be released during the day.
Earlier, a representative of the IDF stated that the Israeli army is preparing for a “gradual withdrawal” of troops from certain areas of Gaza within the framework of the ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages.
Also, on January 19, it became known that in Israel, the far-right Otsma Yehudit party announced its withdrawal from the coalition after the government’s decision to support the agreement with the Hamas group regarding the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Three ministers from the party submitted their resignations.
