Users of the application were met with a message that read: “Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable. The law banning TikTok has gone into effect in the United States. Unfortunately, this means that you cannot use TikTok at this time.” At the same time, the message added: “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a decision to restore TikTok once he takes office. Please stay with us.”

Late Saturday night, TikTok began displaying the following message: “We regret that the US law banning TikTok will take effect on January 19 and will force us to make our services temporarily unavailable. We are working to restore our service in the US as soon as possible, and we appreciate your support. Please stay with us.”

What preceded: On Friday, January 17, the Supreme Court ruled that the ban on TikTok could go into effect this weekend, rejecting an appeal by the owners of the popular app who argued that the ban violated the First Amendment to the Constitution.
