In the Cherkasy region, law enforcement officers exposed fraudsters who were deceiving people, pretending to be military personnel. They stole more than 2.5 million hryvnias, misappropriating funds received as charitable donations.
Criminals created numerous fake accounts in popular social networks, using photos of documents of Ukrainian servicemen found in open sources. They published advertisements to raise funds to support the army, but spent the money on their own needs.
The cyber police, together with the investigators, tracked the movement of funds, starting from the moment of their appropriation to the stage of legalization. The persons who registered fake accounts and organized the collection of money were identified. Law enforcement officers also conducted 11 searches in Cherkasy and Kyiv regions, during which mobile phones, bank cards, computers and other evidentiary materials were seized.
Three suspects have been charged under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Perpetrators face up to eight years in prison.
