Details: Seoul’s Western District Court granted a request to extend the president’s detention, citing the risk of destroying evidence related to charges of sedition and abuse of power during the Dec. 3 martial law.

In response, a group of protesters forced their way into the courthouse, smashing windows, hurling chairs, trash and other objects, and spraying fire extinguishers at police officers stationed around the building.

They were part of a crowd of 44,000 Yun supporters who gathered outside the courthouse on Saturday as the impeached president participated in a hearing to extend his detention.

Some protesters clashed with police as they tried to break into the courthouse, ignoring repeated warnings from police that their actions could lead to arrests or potentially spark a stampede.

Since Saturday, police have detained 86 protesters and set up a special investigation team to investigate the incident and determine the next course of action against those involved.

The law enforcement officers said that they would “strictly” deal with those who violated the law.

What preceded: South Korean investigators entered the presidential residence on Wednesday to detain impeached President Yoon Seok-yeol.

Prehistory:

  • South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol declared a state of emergency in the country on December 3. In a direct televised address to the nation, Yun said the measure was necessary to protect the country from “communist forces.” He did not name a specific threat from nuclear-armed North Korea and focused on his domestic political opponents.
  • South Korea’s National Assembly voted on December 4 to demand President Yoon Seok-yeol lift martial law. After that, the president announced that martial law would be lifted in the country.
  • The opposition Democratic Party of South Korea planned to accuse Yeol of treason and launch impeachment proceedings.
  • In a December 7 address, South Korea’s president said he “sincerely regrets” having caused public concern by declaring martial law, promising not to do it again.
  • According to the South Korean newspaper Yonhap, the court issued a warrant for the arrest of Yoon Seok-yeol, the president of South Korea, who was impeached.
