Israel’s cabinet has approved an agreement with the Palestinian militant group Hamas on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.

Details: Late on Friday, January 17, after a meeting that lasted more than six hours, the government ratified a deal that could pave the way for an end to the 15-month war in the Palestinian enclave controlled by Hamas.
Literally: “The government has approved a plan to return the kidnapped. The plan to release the hostages will take effect on Sunday, January 19, 2025.”
Details: According to the agreement, 33 Israeli hostages, including women, children, men over 50 years old and wounded, will be released in the first stage. More than 700 Palestinian prisoners will also be released, including 275 people accused of killing Israelis. In addition, 1,000 Palestinians detained during the war but not involved in the October 7 attacks will be released.
Humanitarian aid will also be delivered to the Gaza Strip, including 600 trucks with humanitarian aid and 50 fuel tankers, as well as 200,000 tents and 60,000 mobile homes for displaced persons.
The agreement stipulates that Qatar, Egypt and the United States will act as guarantors of the implementation of the agreement.
On the sixteenth day of the truce, Israel and Hamas will begin negotiations on the second phase of the agreement, which includes the release of the remaining hostages, a permanent ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
