In the first set, Marta won 3:1, and in the 9th game for 4:4, she did not realize 5 break points, in particular, giving away from 0:40. The Spaniard took the Ukrainian’s serve in the 10th game.
In the second game, the Ukrainian led 5:0 and served for the set. Badosa managed to win 4 games in a row, but Kostiuk took the game to the third decisive game. Unfortunately, the Spaniard immediately took advantage and did not give away the victory.
This was the fifth meeting of the rivals. Marta lost the fourth face-to-face confrontation.
Marta failed to defend last year’s quarter-final. Then she gave way to Coco Goff. At AO-2025 Kostyuk managed to beat Nao Hibino and Yule Niemeier.
Paula repeated her best performance on the Melbourne courts, reaching the 4th round. She had the same result in 2022. The Spaniard will compete against Olga Danylovich or Jessica Pegula for a place in the quarterfinals.
Ukraine will continue to be represented at the major by two tennis players: Dayana Yastremska and Elina Svitolina. They will hold their 3rd round meetings on Saturday, January 18.
Marta will still play in doubles in Melbourne. On January 18, the Ukrainian and her partner Yelena-Gabriela Ruse from Romania will play against the Australian tandem Destani Ayava / Maddison Inglis.
