Under the guise of employment or education, Russia is recruiting Indian citizens into its army, sending them to war against Ukraine. This was reported by The Washington Post.

The recent death of an Indian citizen who fought as part of the Russian army in Ukraine has drawn attention to the Kremlin’s practice of enlisting foreigners in hostilities and “strained previously prosperous relations between New Delhi and Moscow,” the newspaper said.

Citing statements from the Indian government and relatives of the men who ended up in the Russian army, WP reported that the Russian side was recruiting them with promises of jobs or education.

According to WP, about a hundred Indian citizens are participating in the war on the side of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Binil Babu, 32, who died in January, became the tenth Indian to be confirmed dead.

As WP notes, the Russian authorities regularly deny accusations of their actions and declare their intention to release Indian citizens from the Russian army.

On January 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India announced that an Indian citizen recruited by the Russian Federation had died during the war in Ukraine, and another was injured and being treated in Moscow.

The ministry said the Narendra Modi-led Indian government had “vigorously taken up” the issue with Russian authorities and the Russian embassy in New Delhi.

At the same time, they emphasized that it is necessary to demobilize Indian citizens recruited by Russia as soon as possible.

On October 21, 2024, the Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, Vikram Misri, announced that India had returned 85 of its citizens from the war zone, who were tricked into signing a contract with the Russian army and sent to war against Ukraine.

On July 8, Narendra Modi arrived in Moscow, making his first visit to the Russian Federation since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The Indian Prime Minister visited the Russian Federation on the day when the aggressor country attacked the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv, publishing a photo of him hugging.

On July 9, NDTV, citing its own sources, reported that dictator Putin, after meeting with Modi, decided to release all Indians who had been recruited into the Russian army.

Later, the fact of the relevant agreement between Putin and Modi was confirmed by the first deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, Vinay Kwatra.

On July 11, BBC journalists reported that the Russian authorities had begun paying compensation (approximately $210 thousand) to the families of Indian citizens who were recruited for the war and died in the battles.

Later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India said that the country’s government continues to work with the Kremlin to return to the Motherland about 50 Indians who are fighting in the Russian army.
