Prime Minister of Great Britain Keir Starmer and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi signed an agreement on a one-year partnership between the countries. This was announced by the leaders of the states on January 16 during a briefing in Kyiv, where the British Prime Minister is currently on a visit, Radio Liberty correspondent reports.

“Today is a historic day. The relationship between Ukraine and Britain is now closer than ever. Today, we have reached a new level of relations, and these are even more than strategic relations. This is the basis for the interaction of our peoples for generations to come,” Volodymyr Zelenskyi said.

The agreement provides that the parties will deepen defense cooperation. In addition, the agreement will promote military cooperation between the countries through a new structure to strengthen security in the Baltic, Black and Azov seas. It is also envisaged to strengthen cooperation in the field of energy, climate and the transition to clean energy.

Starmer also said that in 2025, Great Britain will supply Ukraine with a new mobile air defense system funded by Denmark, and will continue training the Ukrainian military. For almost three years, more than 50,000 servicemen from Ukraine have already been trained in Great Britain.

In addition, Great Britain, according to Starmer, has already allocated three billion pounds for military aid to Ukraine and is going to provide a loan worth 2.2 billion pounds, which will be covered by interest from frozen Russian assets. London will also hand over 150 artillery barrels to Kyiv, Starmer added.

Starmer’s trip to Kyiv was his first visit to Ukraine as Prime Minister. During Starmer’s stay in the capital of Ukraine, Russian troops attacked Kyiv with drones.
