This happened a few days before the return of US President-elect Donald Trump to the White House, writes The Guardian.

It is noted that the two countries plan to conclude a partnership agreement to deepen existing relations in the defense sphere and will consider the possibility of further military assistance to Kyiv “against fears that the US may begin to withdraw its support.”

The publication reminds that Zelensky called on Western allies to continue providing long-term military support to Ukraine, warning that refusal “will only lead to even greater aggression, chaos and war.”

Starmer and Zelensky are expected to discuss what security guarantees the UK can offer Kyiv, including the possibility of British troops joining post-war peacekeeping forces.

“Putin’s ambition to wrest Ukraine from our closest partners was a monumental strategic failure. Instead, we are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to a new level,” Starmer said.

The paper notes that Starmer’s visit comes after he discussed the prospects of a war in Ukraine after Trump’s return with French President Emmanuel Macron in Checkers last week. In particular, the leaders of the states discussed the importance of providing security guarantees to Ukraine.

Ukraine and the UK also aim to strengthen economic ties in non-military areas such as science and technology. And also Starmer, according to the publication, will announce the allocation of 40 million pounds for economic recovery, which will “create new opportunities for British companies.”

Funding will target businesses that support the green economy and marginalized groups, including women and veterans. It builds on the £12.8 billion of support the UK has already given to Ukraine, including £7.8 billion in military aid and ongoing energy infrastructure support, the publication said.

“Thanks to this partnership, we are creating a strong economy that works for the British people, a secure country that protects our interests at home and abroad, and a prosperous society,” Starmer said.

Updated at 10:15 a.m. Ambassador of Ukraine to Great Britain Valery Zaluzhnyi welcomed Prime Minister Starmer in Kyiv. He emphasized that “this is his first visit to Ukraine at the head of the British government and it will definitely be full of events.”

“The British side is actively helping us in these difficult times. Therefore, at the talks in Kyiv, the top leadership of Ukraine and Great Britain will discuss further cooperation, first of all, in the security sphere,” Zaluzhny emphasized.

But the most important expectation, he added, is “the signing of an important Agreement on a 100-year partnership between our countries, which will cover a number of areas from defense to science and culture.”

Also, according to the ambassador, it is planned to resume the work of the Strategic Partnership Dialogue – a tool that will allow “to effectively discuss and resolve various issues of bilateral cooperation.”

Zaluzhny published a photo with Starmer.
