A lucky loser from Kyiv knocked out a Russian woman who had disguised herself as France

German tennis player Eva Lys (WTA 128), who was born in Kyiv, reached the 3rd round of the 2025 Australian Open.

In the 1/32 final, Eva lost in three sets Varvar Grachov (France, WTA 69) in 1 hour and 58 minutes.

This was the second meeting of the rivals. In 2022, Lys defeated Varvara in the 1/16 finals of the clay competition in Lausanne.

Until 2023, Hrachova played under the flag of Russia / in a “neutral” status, after which she received a French passport in June.

Lys got into the main draw, having received the status of a lucky loser. In the 1st round of the basics, Eva won against Kimberly Birrell 6:2, 6:2.

Lys is playing at the Australian Open for the third time and for the second time at the base. She made it to the 3rd round of an Australian major for the first time, which is also now her best Grand Slam result.

Eva’s next opponent will be the winner of the confrontation between Jacqueline Christian (Romania, WTA 82) and Lucia Bronzetti (Italy, WTA 76).
