U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, who was nominated by Donald Trump for the post of Secretary of State, said during the hearings in the Senate on Wednesday, January 15, that in order to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, both countries must agree to compromises.

This is reported by Barron’s with reference to the AFP agency.

According to Rubio, the next US administration will strive bold diplomacy” in order to stop the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This war has to end, and I think it should be the official policy of the United States that we want it to end,” Rubio said at a Senate confirmation hearing.

It is important that everyone be realistic. Concessions must be made by both the Russian Federation and Ukrainians,” Rubio said.

As Reuters writes, Rubio also noted that Ukraine should have leverage, repeating that Kyiv will have to make concessions.

In 2023, Rubio was one of 15 Republican senators who voted against a major military aid package for Ukraine.

On December 4, 2024, the WSJ reported that Andriy Yermak, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, is negotiating with the new Trump administration to reduce differences regarding the peaceful resolution of the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine even before he takes office.

According to the publication, Trump’s advisers discussed peace plans that recognize Russia’s occupation of 20% of Ukraine’s territory and do not include Ukraine joining NATO.

On December 6, Yermak said that during his visit to the United States, he held a number of meetings with “key people” of Trump’s team. He emphasized that he will not name the surnames yet gentlemen’s agreements”.
