Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk promised to use his country’s presidency of the European Union to speed up Ukraine’s EU membership.

“The Polish Presidency (in the Council of the EU – ed) will break the deadlock (hopeless, dead end – ed.), which took place in recent months, and we will work together with Ukraine and our European partners to speed up the accession process,” Tuska said at a press conference following the meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi on January 15.

At the same time, Tusk added that Poland will help Ukraine, but also “take care of its own interests.”

Poland currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union and Warsaw will have the leverage to put Ukraine’s integration on the agenda for the next six months.

Hungary has chaired the EU Council for the past six months.

In October 2024, the European Commission stated that Ukraine had fulfilled all the outstanding steps identified in its 2022 conclusion.

In December 2023, the European Council decided to start negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union. The country received the status of a candidate for joining the European Union in June 2022.
