Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiga said that Ukraine will not make concessions on the issue of the right to join NATO during the upcoming negotiations on ending the war. The state’s position remains firm, the course for joining NATO has long been enshrined in the Constitution, and a convincing majority of Ukrainian society is in favor of Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance.

He said this in an interview with “European Truth”.

“The only effective guarantee for Ukraine is membership in NATO. Moreover, Ukraine’s membership is a guarantee of the security of NATO itself. In addition, Ukraine’s full membership in NATO is, pardon the cynicism, also the cheapest option for ensuring European security,” Sybiga explained.

“We have already gone through “alternative options”. We saw how the Budapest Memorandum failed. The creation of any “gray areas” only leads to further aggravations. Therefore, Ukraine’s membership in NATO is an unshakable priority and the only effective security guarantee for our country,” he emphasized.

Recently, the minister had a conversation with a foreign colleague who, back in 2008, was present at the summit in Bucharest, where a decision could be made to provide Ukraine and Georgia with an Action Plan on membership. At that time, Putin directly threatened European leaders that he would occupy Ukraine if such a decision was made.

“As we know, then the Alliance showed weakness and historical short-sightedness. And what did we see then? Russia occupied Georgia, then occupied and annexed Crimea, and now we have a full-scale war. Those mistakes cannot be repeated. We need strong decisions that will create strategic guarantees for transatlantic security. And this is Ukraine’s membership in NATO,” Sybiga emphasized.

He added that other instruments, in particular bilateral security agreements with partners, are a component of Ukraine’s preparation for NATO membership and a tool for its strengthening, but cannot replace membership.

Ukraine should become a member of NATO in the future, but it is too early to talk about it. Such a statement was made by the Secretary General of the Alliance, Mark Rutte, speaking in the European Parliament at a meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Most Ukrainians want to see the country as a member of the European Union and NATO, but joining the defense alliance is currently a higher priority.

And Vladimir Putin’s assistant, Mykola Patrushev, said that the goals of the Russian Federation in Ukraine remain unchanged. He said Russia was committed to achieving what the Russian dictator used as a justification for the invasion, a sign that Putin’s goals in the war had not changed.
