Before Yun was escorted to the headquarters of the anti-corruption agency, he reportedly recorded a video message in which he complained that “the rule of law has completely collapsed in this country.”

The Office of Corruption Investigation for High-ranking Officials reported that Yoon was detained in a second attempt for imposing martial law in the country on December 3.

The report said Yoon was seen getting out of his car after arriving at the anti-corruption agency’s office in the nearby city of Gwacheon. After interrogation, he was to be sent to Uiwang Detention Center near Seoul.

Yun can be detained for weeks, the publication writes. The anti-corruption agency has 48 hours to request a court order for formal arrest, and if it fails to do so, Yoon will be released. If Yoon is formally arrested, investigators can hold him in custody for up to 20 days before handing the case over to prosecutors for charges.

The case of impeachment of the president is currently being considered by the Constitutional Court, which can officially remove Yun from office or reject the case and reinstate him, the newspaper reports.

South Korea’s acting leader, Vice Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, called on law enforcement agencies and the president’s security service to ensure the absence of “physical clashes”.

Meanwhile, the leader of the liberal opposition Democratic Party, which led the legislative campaign that led to Yun’s impeachment on Dec. 14, Park Chang-dae, said the president’s detention was “the first step toward restoring constitutional order, democracy and the realization of the rule of law.”

Impeachment of the President of South Korea: what is knownAs UNIAN previously reported, at the beginning of January 2025 in South Korea, investigators tried to arrest President Yoon Seok-yol. They entered his residence to execute the warrant, but were met by a cordon of State Security Service personnel and military personnel. Also, hundreds of Yun’s supporters staged protests, so the investigators had to leave.

On December 14, 2024, the South Korean parliament voted to impeach the country’s president, Yoon Suk-yeol. The reason for the impeachment was the scandalous introduction of martial law in South Korea.

Before that, on December 3, Yun announced the introduction of martial law. The decision was explained by the fact that the parliament wants to dismiss the ministers of defense and state security, which, they say, threatens the security of the country. He also accused the opposition of an “anti-state act” and declared the threat of “communist forces of North Korea”. However, the parliament then abolished martial law.
