Pete Hegseth, a candidate for the post of US Defense Secretary, said that the new administration of President-elect Donald Trump wants the war to end favorably for Ukrainians.
He said this during the hearings of the Senate Committee on Armed Forces Affairs, which is considering his candidacy for the position, Voice of America journalist Ostap Yarysh reported.
Senator Angus King noted that in his speeches Pete Hegseth, speaking about priorities, focused on China, but did not mention Russian aggression against Ukraine. According to the legislators, this could indicate that the USA may leave Ukraine.

In response, Hegset emphasized that the decision on this is made at the level of the president, who already is “clearly stated” his desire to end the war.
“We know who the aggressor is. We know who the good guys are. We want it to be as beneficial as possible for Ukrainians. But this war must be put to an end,” he said.
On November 13, 2024, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that he plans to nominate Fox News anchor and veteran Pete Hagseth as US Secretary of Defense.
Current and former Pentagon officials were shocked by the upcoming appointment of Hegset as the head of the Ministry of Defense, because he had never managed a large structure, Politico wrote on November 14.
On November 15, The Guardian newspaper reported that two of Trump’s associates may not get their jobs because of allegations of sexual harassment. They were talking about possible Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General nominee Matt Goetz.
In 2017, police in California investigated a case of alleged sexual assault by Hegseth, although no formal charges were ever filed.
According to the AP, in his latest book, Hegseth claimed that the U.S. Army “weakened’ by the implementation of equality, inclusion and diversity, and that ‘the next commander-in-chief will have to sort things out’.
He also mocked transgender military personnel and claimed that allowing women to serve in combat units was allegedly “complicates hostilities.” In 2019, Hegseth actively lobbied for pardons for US military accused of war crimes, which was eventually granted by Donald Trump.
