Ukraine’s European allies have expressed cautious optimism that the newly elected US President Donald Trump will not force Kyiv into premature negotiations with Russia. This is reported by Bloomberg UNN.

The admission followed a series of private talks with members of Trump’s team in which the transatlantic partners stressed the need for continued support for Ukraine, according to European officials familiar with the matter, who declined to be named because the talks were being held behind closed doors.

The exchange, they say, opens up the prospect that a new administration could help war-torn Ukraine get back on a strong footing before any talks take place.

But those who have held private talks caution that they do not know what the new president will do.

According to the Europeans, Trump officials took two arguments that the new US leader would risk a humiliation comparable to President Joe Biden’s chaotic withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan if he stopped aid to Ukraine; and secondly, if Russia is allowed to win, it will only encourage China to take more aggressive steps.

A week before the 47th president is sworn in, it’s still unclear how Trump will handle the Russian war. According to European and Ukrainian officials, Trump’s team has several ideas, but no plan for Ukraine that could be implemented after the Jan. 20 inauguration.

But the talks sparked a sense of cautious relief in European capitals, where officials played out worst-case scenarios if Trump follows through on his promise to end the war quickly — and perhaps strike a deal that sidelines Kyiv and props up Russian President Vladimir Putin.
