STARODUBTSEVA: “What’s the point of going to Ukraine if I can’t get to my city?”

Ukrainian tennis player Julia Starodubtseva spoke about the war in Ukraine:

“It’s frustrating, but I don’t know what we can do about it: it’s like old news. I hate it the most, but people forget, they have other concerns, and somewhere in the background there is some kind of war going on.

I feel that I am one of the most affected by this war because my family is in that part of Ukraine [рідне місто Юлії Каховка було захоплене в перші дні вторгнення. У неї залишилися там деякі родичі, які не встигли евакуюватися].

I would be happy to return to Ukraine [Юлія живе в Німеччині]. But I don’t see the point of going to Ukraine if I can’t get to my hometown.”

On January 12, Yulia played a match of the 1st round of the Australian Open 2025, in which she was defeated by Leila Fernandez.
