In the Kursk region, the Russians destroyed the North Korean anti-aircraft complex: what does this show

It is likely that the strike was aimed at the anti-aircraft missile complex of the “Kadyrovtsi” special forces.

According to the military-political commentator Oleksandr Kovalenko, the presence of such air defense systems in service with the Russian troops became known only after a Russian anti-aircraft missile struck it.

As Kovalenko notes, the Russian Fpv-drone struck the North Korean short-range anti-aircraft missile complex – Pongae M-2020, which is an analogue of the Tor-M2 air defense system. As the reviewer notes, the UAV operator probably decided that he had some western type of air defense system in his sight, and worked on it “automatically”. The War Zone Telegram channel reported, in particular, about the “friendly fire” of the occupiers.

“The Russian Federation struck the Kadyrov anti-aircraft missile complex, mistaking it for the radar of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As a result, due to numerous problems with the interaction, the object of Kadyrov’s special forces was hit…”, the message reads.

Kovalenko draws attention to the fact that there are several very important points in what happened.

“First of all, we can talk about the expansion of the range of technical equipment supplied from the DPRK to Russia. Currently, the delivery of the following range has been verified: Bulsae-4/5 – mobile anti-tank guided missile defense system; M1989 Koksan – 170-mm self-propelled guns; M1985/M1991 – 240- mm RSZV; KN-15 – a medium-range ballistic missile. And now also an air defense system Pongae M-2020, the transfer of which was not reported by either Western or South Korean intelligence,” Kovalenko emphasizes.

Secondly, according to him, the Pongae M-2020 anti-aircraft systems were transferred and deployed on combat duty very covertly – they were not known until the occupiers themselves mistakenly destroyed one of these installations.

The analyst reminded that the supply of KN-15 also became known only when they were verified on the territory of the Russian Federation. According to Kovalenko, this indicates a “logistical chain” of supplies that is not tracked by the intelligence of the allies, which is “extremely alarming”.

At the same time, the presence of the North Korean Pongae M-2020 in the Russian Federation indicates that the aggressor country has a problem with air defense. The reviewer stated:

“From the DPRK, Russia is asking for exactly what it lacks most, and these deliveries reflect the difficulty of filling losses. First, shells – projectile hunger, then “meat” (soldiers – UNIAN) – lack of personnel, then artillery, ballistics, and now already the Air Defense Forces.”

He also draws attention to the fact that the Pongae M-2020 complex is an exact copy of the Tor-M2 missile launcher presented in 2020 at a parade in Pyongyang in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

“But everyone “scored” on the possibility of technology supplies from Russia to the DPRK and called it a cardboard mockup. Yes, cardboard mockups, just like the KN-23/KN-24 that are flying around Kharkov. How many such cardboard mockups, which as a result turned out to be combat equipment,” the analyst emphasized.

What weapons does North Korea transfer to Russia? It was previously reported that North Korea supplies Russia not only with its large-caliber Koksan self-propelled guns, but also with shells of various calibers. Oleg Katkov, editor-in-chief of the specialized military publication Defense Express, said that there are thousands of Koksan self-propelled guns in the DPRK. According to him, North Korea can also provide the Russian Federation with the necessary amount of ammunition, the production of which is expanding in the DPRK.
