Pistorius’ direct speech: “Ukraine can count on us, and this is a signal. And Germany is ready to take responsibility in Europe.”

Details: Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksiy Makeev symbolically accepted the first of 54 wheeled howitzers planned for Ukraine.

The first six of these systems will initially remain in Germany and will be used for training Ukrainian soldiers.

“We don’t need mediators, we need allies. We have to fight for peace. It’s nice to know that Germany is on Ukraine’s side,” the Ukrainian ambassador said regarding possible negotiations to end the war.

KNDS is a merger of the traditional German company KMW and the French arms company Nexter. The company describes its development as “the world’s most advanced wheeled howitzer,” which allows for the first time to fire while moving. The gun turret can be controlled remotely, so it can be controlled from the outside. The crew of the new and largely automated artillery system should consist of two soldiers.

The howitzer – a 155 mm gun mounted on a four-axle armored wheeled vehicle (“8×8”) – will also later be transferred to the German army, which is also expecting a wheeled system for faster deployment. KNDS also builds the Panzerhaubitze 2000, a tracked artillery mount.

Prehistory:

  • It became known last summer that the Franco-German arms concern KNDS has an agreement with Ukraine to supply 54 RCH 155 howitzers.
  • In early June 2024, KNDS announced plans to create a subsidiary in Ukraine.
