Details: Trump’s claims that Canada “should become the 51st state of the United States” drew condemnation from the former Canadian prime minister, who called on the new American leader to “come to his senses”.

Chretien declared that Canada would never agree to become part of the United States. He emphasized that Trump’s statements are “absolutely unacceptable insults and unprecedented threats” to Canadian sovereignty.

“Donald Trump, from one grandfather to another, come to your senses! What could make you think that Canadians would ever give up the best country in the world – and we are, without a doubt – to join the United States?” – he emphasized.

The ex-prime minister of Canada said that if Trump thinks that he will “conquer” the country with threats and insults, then he knows nothing about Canada.

“We may look easy to climb, soft in communication. But make no mistake, we have backbone and firmness,” Chretien assured.

We will remind:

  • Trump has threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods and accused Ottawa of failing to address trade and immigration issues.
  • Negotiations between Trudeau and Trump amid these threats were marked by Trump’s repeated jokes about Canada as the “51st state of the United States.” In particular, on January 8, Trump published maps showing Canada as part of the United States.
  • On January 9, the media reported that the Canadian government is considering introducing tariffs on a wide range of American-made goods if Trump carries out his threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports.
