Prehistory:

  • Recently, the publication Spiegel unofficially learned that a dispute has allegedly arisen within the German government regarding an additional arms package for Ukraine in the amount of about 3 billion euros. The package was formed by Berbok and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius based on urgent requests from Ukraine.
  • However, as the publication writes, Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke against it and believes that the already planned aid is enough and that Kyiv can also spend funds from the joint loan from the G7 on weapons, and that it would be unfair to “face the facts” with the new German government that will be formed after early elections in February. This opinion is shared by some other members of Scholz’s party.
  • However, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock insists that Berlin should provide Ukraine with more military aid than is currently planned in the budget. Burbok expressed the opinion that if this is not done, Ukraine “will be less able to defend itself, and therefore less able to protect us.”
  • It is also reported that in the first half of 2025, Germany is preparing to transfer significant packages of military aid to Ukraine at the expense of funds already budgeted, which will include Leopard tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
