Who will be the new chancellor of Germany? Scholz and Weidel are official candidates

In Germany, two political forces have chosen their candidates for chancellorship. The Social Democratic Party of Germany has nominated Olaf Scholz, and the Alternative for Germany – Alice Weidel, reports UNN with reference to DW.

Olaf Scholz is a candidate for chancellor of Germany from SPD

At a congress in Berlin, the current head of government promised to raise the minimum wage in Germany to 15 euros per hour, fight xenophobia against migrants and improve social protection for families with children. Scholz also said that the measures proposed by the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, currently leading in opinion polls, will bring “even more benefits to millionaires and billionaires” and “ordinary people” will pay for it.

Olaf Scholz also said that “Putin’s Russia has invaded Ukraine with a brutal war of aggression,” and some parties in Germany are now “one by one telling false tales from the Kremlin.” The Social Democrat again opposed the supply of long-range German missiles to Ukraine, reminding that Russia is a nuclear power.

The head of the SPD, Lars Klingbeil, said that Scholz, “as chancellor, during Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, with the help of curbing gas and electricity prices, ensured that employment was guaranteed, and companies were helped against the background of the energy crisis.”

The 66-year-old Scholz, despite the collapse of his ruling coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals, and his own low ratings, has no doubts about his victory. But if the SPD loses the early parliamentary elections on February 23, and the federal chancellor’s office goes to conservatives from the CDU/CSU bloc, Scholz’s reign will be shorter than that of any Social Democratic chancellor before him.

Alice Weidel is the candidate of the right-wing populist AdN for chancellor of Germany

In her welcoming speech at the congress in Saxony, Weidel said that her party’s task is to make Germany “strong, rich and safe” again and called for the complete closure of Germany’s borders. Alternative for Germany co-chairman Tino Hrupalla stated the goal of exceeding the 20 percent voter support level and achieving Alice Weidel as chancellor.

45-year-old Weidel calls her idol Margaret Thatcher, who led a radically liberal economic course in Britain – lowering taxes, cutting state subsidies, and privatization. This approach corresponds to the ideas of Alice Weidel, an economist with a scientific degree who previously engaged in commercial consulting.

The AdN chancellor candidate also promises to try to reform the European Union – and if this fails, she says, then each participating country should be given the right to decide in a referendum whether to remain a part of the EU or not.

In a conversation with Weidel the other day, Elon Musk called her a “leading candidate” for the position of chancellor of Germany. However, in reality, she has no chance of becoming “Trump in a skirt”, according to political scientists. Even if “Alternative for Germany” takes first place in the upcoming elections, other parties, according to their leaders, are not ready to join a coalition with them to form a government.
