“We don’t want to be Danes, we don’t want to be Americans, we want to be Greenlanders,” he said.
At that meeting, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Greenland’s desire for independence was “legitimate and understandable.”
Frederiksen added that she wants to keep the Kingdom of Denmark, which includes Denmark, Greenland and the autonomous territory of the Faroe Islands.
“I personally believe that if we stick together, we are stronger in the global game,” she emphasized.
At that press conference, Egede said he was ready to talk to Trump, who wants to gain control of the Arctic island.
Trump has previously refused to rule out using military or economic force to gain control of Greenland, calling it a matter of US national security.
The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, then emphasized that Greenland belongs to its inhabitants and that she could not imagine a real attempt by the US to take the island by force.
A number of other European leaders have also made it clear that Trump’s statements are unacceptable.
