President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Friday, January 10, that Ukraine dreams of receiving strong security guarantees and ending the war started by the aggressor Russia in 2025.
He said this in an interview with the Italian TV channel RaiNews24, which was published on YouTube by the Office of the President.
“Our dream this year is to get security guarantees [які недозволять Путіну поновити агресію] to end the war this year. We will do everything for this,” Zelensky said.
He also said that Ukraine and Europe need serious security guarantees, so the US should put pressure on Russia.
“It is very important for us that peace comes, we want peace above all else. And this is understandable, because we lose more than everyone else, especially people… But before agreeing on something, it is very important that these are serious security guarantees. That these were guarantees for Ukraine and all of Europe. This is the protection of Ukraine and a security guarantee that Russia will not return…” – believes the Ukrainian president.
He emphasized that Ukraine and Europe need such guarantees that Putin or any of his successors will never invade Ukraine again. Zelensky reminded that Putin always wanted to completely destroy Ukraine.
On January 2, Zelensky stated that without the United States of America, any security guarantees for Ukraine are weak.
He cited the example of security guarantees for Israel.
“If we take Israeli security guarantees, we see how they repel 200, 300, 500 missiles without NATO, but with the aircraft of the allies: the United States, France, Britain,” Zelensky said.
Prospects of negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine – what is known
On November 20, the Reuters agency wrote that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is ready to discuss with Donald Trump a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine, but rejects any significant territorial concessions and insists that Kyiv abandon its ambitions to join NATO.
He also claimed that the aggressor country is supposedly always ready for “negotiations” and “compromises” with regard to Ukraine. Before that, he made it clear that he would not agree to freezing the war.
On December 20, The Washington Post wrote that Trump will meet Putin in 2025. However, analysts believe that there is little hope for a peace agreement given Putin’s maximalist position and Trump’s fear of appearing weak if he makes concessions to the Russian Federation.
On December 26, Putin said that Slovakia could become a “negotiating platform” for negotiations with Ukraine. At the same time, the dictator rejected Trump’s “peace plan” for Ukraine, which includes Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO for 10 years, according to ISW analysts.
Zelenskyi stated that Ukraine does not yet have enough strength to regain the borders of 1991. The state is ready to return, in particular, Crimea through diplomatic channels.
