“The United States is taking sweeping action against Russia’s primary source of revenue to fund its brutal and illegal war against Ukraine,” Treasury Secretary Janet L. Ellen.

Subsequently, the head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, announced that the United States had announced a “large-scale package” of sanctions against Russia. In particular, according to him, the restrictions were introduced against 184 tankers of the shadow fleet and 14 members of the board of directors of Rosatom.
“The USA took a strong step by announcing a large-scale package of sanctions against Russia. A number of proposals of the McFaul-Yermak group regarding countering the shadow tanker fleet and Rosatom have been taken into account. Sanctions cover more than 400 individuals and organizations of the energy sector of the Russian Federation, which directly or indirectly provide financing for the military machine,” Yermak said.
On December 16, the Council of the EU adopted the 15th package of economic and individual restrictive measures “in order to further limit Russia’s ability to wage an illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine.”
Earlier it became known that the Administration of US President Joe Biden is also considering the introduction of new sanctions aimed at the “shadow fleet” that Russia uses to transport oil, the report said. Russia uses old tankers – often uninsured and with unclear ownership – to export crude oil and petroleum products abroad, despite EU and G7 sanctions.
