Details: According to him, in recent years, Armenia and the EU have had quite intense and dynamic relations.

“They were very rich and covered different areas. The EU has repeatedly expressed its strong political support for democracy in Armenia. The EU, in fact, is involved in ensuring the security environment around Armenia. I mean the deployment of the EU’s civilian monitoring mission,” Mirzoyan said.

He also mentioned that the EU has also expressed its readiness to support the strengthening of Armenia’s economic stability.

“It is clear that the EU has very rich democratic traditions, strong democratic institutions, a free competitive environment, a modern economy and advanced science. You, Mr. Prime Minister, also stated in the European Parliament that Armenia is ready to be as close to the EU as the EU considers it possible.

We have also seen signs that this is possible. I am referring to the beginning of the liberalization of the visa regime and a number of other instruments that have been applied or are being discussed with the EU,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that the decision on Armenia’s accession to the EU should be approved in a referendum.

After approval by the government, the bill must also be voted on in the parliament.

In the previous months, as part of the “Eurogolos” initiative, signatures were collected in Armenia with the demand to immediately start the process of joining the EU.

Prehistory:

  • Last year, on September 9, the European Union began negotiations on the liberalization of the visa regime with Armenia.
  • And in March 2024, the European Parliament adopted a resolution proposing to consider the possibility of granting Armenia candidate status for joining the EU.
  • After that, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that this resolution should become the subject of discussion in Armenia.
