According to the correspondent of UNIAN, Oleksandr Merezhko, People’s Deputy from “Servant of the People”, Chairman of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation said this during the briefing.Responding to UNIAN’s questions about Trump’s latest statements, in particular regarding Ukraine’s membership in NATO, the deputy noted that he had a personal impression of Trump’s style as a politician.
He noted that Trump “is a businessman and he perceives some foreign policy realities through the prism of… he was engaged in real estate, that is, real estate, as you know.”
“Therefore, he may be looking at issues of geopolitics – the fact that there are recent statements regarding Canada, Greenland… But those who have studied his style as a politician – they pay attention to the fact that, if you read, for example, a book even Trump’s talk about the art of making deals is that a businessman starts negotiations by raising the stakes, and then there is a serious discussion and a search for such a middle line, that is, some kind compromise,” Merezhko said.
Thus, he added, “from the point of view of the style of a businessman, such statements, which may sometimes seem a little unclear, – to some extent, one can say, are inherent in the style of politics”:
“But, again, we have to orient ourselves and we have to wait a little bit, when Trump takes the post of president, after the inauguration, when his team is already working, and then we will see the real picture.”
At the same time, Merezhko expressed his conviction that the only real security guarantee for Ukraine is joining NATO.
Trump’s latest statementsAs reported, earlier Trump said that he “can understand the feelings” of Russia in connection with the fact that the current head of the White House, Joe Biden, allegedly violated the “agreement” on the refusal to admit Ukraine to NATO.
Trump noted that “a major part of the problem was that Russia had been saying for many years, long before Putin, that NATO should not be in Ukraine, it was, as it were, etched in stone.”
In addition, Trump made a statement about the deadlines for ending the war in Ukraine and negotiations with Russia. According to him, the situation may worsen in the future.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi reacted to Trump’s statement. He noted that Ukraine wants to receive “concrete security guarantees” from the United States and other Western allies, and Kyiv will discuss this with Trump.
Zelenskyi also commented on Trump’s statement regarding the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO.
“Don’t immediately draw one or another conclusions about US policy. Remember, Ukrainians were told that Patriot systems can be and are only in NATO countries… Well, either you and I have been in NATO for a long time, or we should not make hasty conclusions “That’s how we had it with Patriot, that’s what we had with missile systems and other NATO weapons,” the president recalled.
