The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, commented on the recent statements of the US President-elect, Donald Trump, that he “can understand the feelings” of the Russian Federation due to Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO. And that Ukraine should never join the Alliance.

As “Interfax-Ukraine” reports, at a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Elina Valtonen on Wednesday, Zelenskyi said: “Remember, they told Ukraine that Patriot systems can be and are only in NATO countries? Well, either you and I have been in NATO for a long time, or there is no need to draw any conclusions. It was the same for us with the Patriot, it was the same with our missile systems and other weapons. Now we need to work and do everything so that Ukraine receives security guarantees worthy of our people, which could stop Putin.”

The President noted that Ukraine was never in NATO and, unfortunately, was not protected by a serious alliance of security guarantors. Zelensky emphasized that there is no war in NATO countries, but Ukraine, which is at war, has the right to demand serious and strong security guarantees from the world, which constantly claims leadership, and from countries that claim world peace.

According to the head of state, the issue of security guarantees depends not only on the USA, but also on the allied position in Europe. “And, I will tell you honestly, unfortunately, with all due respect to all the countries of Europe, to the United States, and with all due respect to the amount (of aid) provided to us since the beginning of the war, but NATO did not have the joint support of the United States with all allies in Europe,” Zelensky emphasized.

He reminded that “there are countries that opposed our chance in NATO”: USA, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia. The president added that Ukraine was not seen in the alliance, and this is one of the reasons why there is now a war. “Because they were not afraid that Ukraine would be with someone. That is, Putin understood that no one would stand up for Ukraine. He understood that his army is bigger, he can destroy us. But the Ukrainian army, it impressed the whole world,” Zelenskyi emphasized.

As reported, on January 7, US President-elect Donald Trump said that he “can understand the feelings” of the Russian Federation due to Ukraine’s desire to join NATO and warned that the war could escalate.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged not to take Donald Trump’s pre-election promise to end the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours” literally.
