When Donald Trump won the presidential election in 2016 for the first time, alienating both influential Republicans and Democrats, it was a shock. His second victory in 2024 comes after a defeat in 2020, inciting supporters to try to forcefully overturn the loss, continued control of his party, nearly 90 felony charges (and convictions for 34 of them), two attempted murders, and one replacement for the Democratic primary candidate—seems absolutely fantastic. Only one previous president, Grover Cleveland, managed to return to the White House after being kicked out. That was over a century ago.
