The Russian army continues to storm the urban development of Kurakhovo – OSUV “Khortytsia”

In the Kurakhiv direction, the Defense Forces are resisting the Russian army’s attempts to launch an offensive, the press service of the “Khortytsia” operational and strategic group of troops reported on January 7.

“The enemy actively carried out assault actions in the urban development of Kurakhovo and in the direction of Dachny and Yantarny. Measures to localize and destroy the enemy’s assault groups that have infiltrated our battle formations are underway,” the message reads.

The day before, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the capture of Kurakhovo in Donetsk region, while the Khortytsia Operational-Strategic Group of Forces reported on fighting in the city.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not comment on the statement of the Russian side.

ISW reported that they did not find confirmation of statements in Russia that Russian troops pushed Ukrainian troops out of part of the Kurakhiv thermal power station (TES).

According to the Deep State project, as of January 5, Kurakhove was almost completely captured, the territory on the outskirts of the city remained under the control of the Armed Forces.

On December 26, the report of the American Institute for the Study of War already reported on the probable capture of Kurakhovoy. Later, the Armed Forces denied this.

Russian troops intensified offensive operations with the aim of capturing Kurakhovo in mid-October 2024.

According to ISW, the Russian military has concentrated approximately 35,000 to 36,000 troops in the direction of Kurakhovo in recent months. Over the past two months, Russian forces have also carried out a large number of armored attacks in and near Kurakhovo and likely suffered heavy armored losses while trying to capture the settlement.
