During the past 24 hours, 218 combat clashes were recorded at the front. The largest number of attacks by the forces of the Russian Federation were recorded in the Kursk region of Russia and in the Pokrovsky direction, according to the summary of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on January 7.

“In the operational zone in Kurshchyna, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled 94 attacks by Russian invaders over the past 24 hours. In addition, the enemy carried out nine airstrikes, using nine guided bombs, and also carried out 372 artillery attacks on the positions of our troops and settlements,” the post states.

According to the headquarters, in the Pokrovsky direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine stopped 41 assault and offensive actions of Russian troops in the Myrolyubivka, Promin, Sukhy Yar, Pischane, Kotlyne, Ukrainka, Yasenove, Novoelizavetivka, Tarasivka, Elizavetivka, Lysivka, Zelene, Novy Trud and Pokrovsk districts.

“In the direction of Kurakhivka, the Defense Forces repelled 26 attacks on the positions of our troops near Slovyanka, Srybny, Andriivka, Petropavlivka, Kurakhovo, and Dachny,” the military said.

Russian troops also advanced in the Kharkiv, Kupyan, Lyman, Siver, Kramatorsk, Toretsk, Vremiv, Orikhov, and Dnieper directions.

A January 6 report by the American Institute for the Study of War indicated that the strengthening of Ukrainian offensive operations in the Kursk region could be the initial stage of a concerted Ukrainian operation in the Kursk region or elsewhere on the front, although the ISW is not ready to give any specific prediction.

According to ISW, Ukrainian forces have recently advanced in southern Berdyna, the central part of Russkyi Poperechnyi and the central part of Novosotnytskyi, northeast of Suzhi in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation.

On January 5, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation of the NSDC, reported that “Russian troops in Kursk were attacked from several directions, which was a surprise for them.”

The armed forces of Ukraine began an operation in the Kursk region on August 6, occupying more than 1,000 square kilometers. Then the Russian army, with the help of North Korean troops, was able to recapture part of the territory.

In November, the Reuters agency, citing a high-ranking Ukrainian military source who works in the General Staff of Ukraine, reported that due to Russian counterattacks, Ukraine had lost more than 40% of the territory in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, which it captured during hostilities in August. According to the source, Russia has deployed about 59,000 troops in the Kursk region.
